I must have had a knock to the head! I don’t remember the knock but it must have happened because I have decided to set up a new sports club for Triathlon/Multi Sport and something must have affected my thought processes. Why would someone who works stupid hours and in all corners of the country want to spend their spare time developing a new club? Well I do and I would like you to join me on my journey by getting involved with this blog and feeding in your experiences and thoughts and sharing my joy and pain!
I want to take you through the good and bad times, my thoughts and feelings and what I find out. I will be writing from the heart and not with any instructions or directions from any of the organisations which I no doubt will be encountering along the way, including runningsports. In fact, runningsports, hope to learn from my journey (and hopefully your input) and how they can improve their support and services to you whether you are a Club Volunteer or someone supporting volunteers in sport.
So first things first, why did I decide I wanted to set up a club from scratch. Well, quite simply, I wanted to join a triathlon club and there wasn’t one in my patch. I also wanted a club where, as an aging and slow participant I would be supported just as enthusiastically as the youngster arriving through the door or, indeed the talented performer. Corny as it sounds, I wanted a ‘Club for All’ (sounds like a workshop!!) and I wanted it on my doorstep (the north east corner of Derbyshire). As one didn’t exist the only option open to me was to set one up.
Here we are, at the start...what am I about to face? I am feeling daunted, excited, worried and a little bit alone. I will tell you about my very first steps next week but would love to hear from those of you that are at or have been at the same place as me whether it be setting up a new club or perhaps a new section of a club.
