Starting to Count the Cost

Okay, I’ll let you into a secret I started on this journey a few months ago and I did leap into the Coaching Pathway and booked on to both the Level 1 and Level 2 UKCC Triathlon Coaching Awards. I passed the Level 1 and I am currently battling my way through Level 2.

I managed to get some funding towards the Coaching Awards but I still have to pay out first and then claim it back…after I have completed the course. This means at least a 4 month gap between paying out for each course and claiming the money back. I know of at least one other potential Level 2 coach who can’t even book on a Level 2 as he can’t afford to wait that long for a return of his money…even if he finds funding.

Enjoying the coaching and the courses but it feels a little prohibitive to some. Having said that the Level 2 course I am doing is full so market forces and all that…

Coaching DIY

What do I need to set up a club? Well one of things I feel is fundamental is having a coach. Having had a quick chat with the Regional Triathlon Development Manager, it became apparent that triathlon coaches across north east Derbyshire and, indeed west Nottinghamshire were rarer than kangaroo droppings! Well it is about time I did a coaching award, it's years since I have done anything like that so I went to British Triathlon’s website to find out more. Very helpful it was, giving me lots of details about the coaching awards, the pathways etc and introduced me to the fee of £300 for the Level 1 and £470 for the Level 2.

The minimum amount it is going to cost me, the volunteer, to set up a club with a coach was going to be £770 as I will need to be Level 2 to really be delivering unsupervised. Wow! That price doesn’t even cover my time…not that I want to charge for it but if I did it would probably be in the region of £1500 and then there is the equipment and the facility hire. Is this all too much?

The Journey Begins...

I must have had a knock to the head! I don’t remember the knock but it must have happened because I have decided to set up a new sports club for Triathlon/Multi Sport and something must have affected my thought processes. Why would someone who works stupid hours and in all corners of the country want to spend their spare time developing a new club? Well I do and I would like you to join me on my journey by getting involved with this blog and feeding in your experiences and thoughts and sharing my joy and pain!

I want to take you through the good and bad times, my thoughts and feelings and what I find out. I will be writing from the heart and not with any instructions or directions from any of the organisations which I no doubt will be encountering along the way, including runningsports. In fact, runningsports, hope to learn from my journey (and hopefully your input) and how they can improve their support and services to you whether you are a Club Volunteer or someone supporting volunteers in sport.

So first things first, why did I decide I wanted to set up a club from scratch. Well, quite simply, I wanted to join a triathlon club and there wasn’t one in my patch. I also wanted a club where, as an aging and slow participant I would be supported just as enthusiastically as the youngster arriving through the door or, indeed the talented performer. Corny as it sounds, I wanted a ‘Club for All’ (sounds like a workshop!!) and I wanted it on my doorstep (the north east corner of Derbyshire). As one didn’t exist the only option open to me was to set one up.

Here we are, at the start...what am I about to face? I am feeling daunted, excited, worried and a little bit alone. I will tell you about my very first steps next week but would love to hear from those of you that are at or have been at the same place as me whether it be setting up a new club or perhaps a new section of a club.
